Start with the room's problems
Note what does not work now: cabinet access, preparation space, traffic through the room, lighting, or surfaces. Separate must-haves from preferences. If the layout will change, consider the impact on plumbing, electrical, flooring, and adjacent rooms before selecting finishes.
Assign selections and lead times
Identify who is providing cabinetry, appliances, sinks, fixtures, lighting, tile, and other materials. Confirm dimensions and compatibility before orders are placed. Cabinet and countertop work in particular needs a clear sequence; a late choice can hold up several later steps.
Plan for construction at home
